Production Order

A lot of people assume that Ferrari produced the cars in the serial number order.  However, the serial number was stamped on the chassis prior to Ferrari receiving the completed body and chassis from Pininfarina.  The order that Ferrari completed the car then depended on the need and status of the customer.  Other factors causing a car to be finished out of order were things like an upcoming auto show or press presentation.

Ferrari kept track of the production order in a typed and hand written book called the Allestimenti, which means 'production orders'.  These pages contained the production order number, serial number, destination (dealer or customer name and location), paint and leather colors, particulars column (options like A/C or other special requirements) and instrument type (metric or USA).  For those familiar with Ferrari literature, the Allestimenti is where Hilary Raab obtained his information for his red serial numbers book.
