Dates can be entered in a variety of ways:

If you know the full date, enter it in mm/dd/yyyy order.

If you have a partial date, enter it in mm/yyyy or yyyy order.

If the date is questionable, put a question mark (?) on the end of the date.  An example is '1979?'.

If you don't know the date, you can leave it blank.  However, since the date is used for chronological ordering, you may want to put in an approximate date and then add an asterik (*) at the end.  An example is '1979*'.  The record will be put in order as if it were dated 1/1/1979, but the date field will be blank on the web page.
